Abstract
Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) and operative findings of thirty two patient with trials of operative correlation of meniscal tears suggested by MRI were correlated to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of MRI, frquent location of tear and
usefulness
of
notch sign in meniscal injury. Twenty nine of 32 menisci considered consistent with meniscal tears were confirmed at operation to be torn, representing the diagnostic accuracy of MRI of 91%. There revealed 18 tears on medial menisci, 9 tears on
lateral
menisci, 5 tears on the anterior horn and 24 tears on the posterior horn, representing medial and posterior horn to be frequent torn sites. Eight cases(80%) of 10 cases with positive notch sign in MRI were confirmed at operation to be torn. This
results
indicate that MRI is capable of demonstrating meniscal tears with high degree of accuracy and positive notch sing is strongly suggestive of meniscal injury. We believe MRI is the imaging technique of choice in evaluating meniscal injuries.
